Goodbye, Lanyu Series - 1
National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts Collection
Children of Lanyu particularly love to see the sea. They can face the ocean and sit there for a long while. Every time I see their look towards the sea, I have an urge to click the shutter. Their eyes are desolate and their expressions are so sad. I really wish they could have hope. Their moods can only be read by sea. They were born here and are growing up here. The sea is their homeland. They cannot leave the sea, but they begin to sense that one day they have to go away, because their parents have already surrendered. The Jews have eventually returned after leaving Egypt, but the Tao people will not return after leaving Lanyu. I seem to hear the girl in the photo yelling to the sea: “Goodbye, Lanyu!” I hope this is only my illusion.
